Summary 概述The foundational principle that individual clarity is the absolute root of all external order.

Meaning and Structure

The Great Learning is not an academic institution, but a chapter from the Classic of Rites (Liji). It outlines an eight-step framework for examining the outer world and the inner self, establishing the fabric of family and community bonds, and charting a path from individual clarity to peaceful co-existence in a chaotic world.

Operational Framework

  1. Investigation of Things (格物 - géwù): Engaging directly with the actual conditions and objective principles of the world rather than indulging in speculative illusions.
  2. Extension of Knowledge (致知 - zhìzhī): Reaching the limit of reliable understanding through sustained, empirical engagement with reality.
  3. Sincerity of Intent (诚意 - chéngyì): Eliminating internal self-deception so that internal motive matches outward action.
  4. Rectification of the Mind (正心 - zhèngxīn): Removing emotional volatility, biases, and blind spots to maintain steady equilibrium.
  5. Cultivation of the Self (修身 - xiūshēn): The central pivot point of the entire framework; self-governance as a prerequisite for any broader influence.

Once the self is anchored through these five internal stages, the framework scales outward into the public sphere—regulating the family (齐家), governing the state (治国), and bringing peace to all under heaven (平天下).

Distinction

Unlike utilitarian systems that optimize purely for productivity, or managerialism that relies on mission statements, visions, and KPIs, The Great Learning posits that social stability stems from individual coherence. One does not manage the world by imposing arbitrary force, but by establishing a disciplined, unforced order starting from the root of the individual mind.
