叙事 (Xùshì): Narrative (Discourse & CDA) — Exposing the official institutional story.
The actual story being told. It has a plot, a hero, a villain, and a moral (e.g., “We are tightening our belts through restructuring so we can emerge stronger together”).
The entire invisible cage of rules, concepts, and acceptable vocabulary that makes that story sound like objective truth in the first place.
This is how a corporation or bureaucracy tries telling a story to mask institutional failure or enforce compliance.
A discourse is a structured system of thought, language, and institutional practice that shapes what can be thought, said, or even imagined.
Here is why “discourse” and “power” are inextricably linked when you apply critique:
- Language Creates the Boundaries of Reality Language is never a neutral, transparent window. The vocabulary, categories, and phrases permitted inside an institution do not just describe reality - they construct it and police it.
If an organization defines dissent as “being misaligned with company culture,” it has used a linguistic category to reframe a legitimate intellectual objection as a moral or behavioral failure.
You cannot easily argue against a “lack of cultural alignment” because the phrase itself carries a built-in penalty.
- Power Determines Whose Definitions Win In any hierarchy, the dominant group gets to establish the official vocabulary.
When a corporation fires thousands of people and calls it “workforce optimization” or “synergistic restructuring,” that is a discourse designed by power.
It sanitizes a brutal economic reality into a clinical, inevitable-sounding technical process.
- What “Discourse Critique” Actually Does When you apply a critique to a discourse, you aren’t complaining about grammar or style. You are asking three forensic questions:
Whose interests does this specific way of talking serve?
What alternatives are made impossible or unspeakable by using these terms?
How does this vocabulary force people into behavioral compliance (servility) without needing to point a gun at their heads?
In short, discourse is the operating system of power. It is how institutional control is embedded into everyday vocabulary so thoroughly that people end up policing their own thoughts using the master’s terms.
